Warm-ups for Bass Voice and Response to Vocal Fry, Strohbass, and Subharmonics

TL;DR: Being connected in your voice is more important than resonance – you can’t “place” what you don’t have. Vocal fry allows you to be connected; it is not a primary means for vocalization – it is great to use as a developmental tool.

(Mini Voice Lesson) How to Stay Connected for the Developing Voice Purpose of Vocal Fry Vocal Alignment

In this video, I show you what I do to help the voice be connected. This video is more for the starting/developing voices and for those already on the journey. Many times, really great basses are doing this naturally already so they tend to not pay attention to how they got there (also, because it was so natural, it sometimes went unnoticed). What I do here is break it down and give you a starting point so you can continue your journey to being a successful musician!

These are some of the things I do that helps and continues to help me understand how the bass/baritone voice works (in no particular order):

Warming up with “M” and “NG”

Use of Vocal Fry

Connecting all the registers

Resonance through Alignment (Placement is secondary)

Subharmonics

Defining Vocal Fry and Strohbass (we don’t have to agree, we just have to know that it is a fluid concept and what we really need to be looking out for)

Understand that YOUR private voice teacher’s concepts come first. Consulting a professional that knows your voice – use this as a means to supplement your journey of becoming a better singer. If you do not have one, please find one and take lessons from them. My teacher always told us in the choir that we only have one voice. Treat it well and cherish it.

Hopefully this video helps! Make changes, ask questions, keep singing.

Thanks,

Thou
